My Favorite Spinach Dip Recipe

Dear Reader-

No doubt you all will be attending a number of get togethers this holiday season. And of course, you will want to contribute, but what to bring? I have the answer. This spinach dip is sure to be a hit at any party.

You will need the following:

1 cup mayonnaise

1 (16 ounce) container of sour cream

1 (1.80z) package of dry vegetable soup

1 (4oz) can water chestnuts, drained and chopped

1 (9oz.) package of frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained

as much green onion as you prefer

crackers or sourdough bread

Mix everything together in a bowl, and refrigerate for at least 6 hours. This is key, because the dry soup mix needs time to hydrate. If you mix it and serve it right away, the flavor won’t be evenly distributed, and, there will be hard pieces of the vegetables from the soup. Not appetizing! This last step is a guarantee for the best spinach dip anyone at that party has ever had.

Warm Regards,

Erin

p.s. Bring your own serving spoon, but don’t forget to gather it before you leave the party.

Book Now For the Holidays

Dear Reader-

It’s always a fun time in the salon during the holidays. People tend to be a bit more social and fun-loving in our already very relaxed environment. And you know the Girls Of Do Or Dye love a good holiday!

Like the freeway on any given holiday, traffic in the salon during the holiday season gets busy as well. We want everyone to look perfect for all for the season’s meals and parties. But even though we will all be working overtime, it’s prudent for you, the customer, to try to plan ahead for this busy time. We know your schedule is just as impacted as ours!

Best,

DOD

p.s- while mingling at all those hors de oeuvres tables, remember not to double dip!

We have a YouTube Channel!

Dear Reader-

We have a YouTube channel! The name of our channel is asthecurlturns56

We have hair advice, tutorials, tips and tricks on a variety of topics! We are very informative without the formality, because we don’t take ourselves too seriously. This episode is about Halloween spray-on temporary hair color. Tune in!

Regards,

Erin

We Love Halloween!

Dear Reader-

The girls of Do Or Dye just love Halloween. We started decorating at the end of September just so we could stretch out the Halloween spirit for a few extra days. The theme is Dia De Los Muertos, and we all brought in our favorite items. We even have an altar honoring the returning spirits for Day Of the Dead. We are Walking Dead fans, and love some good gore, one of us more than the rest ( wink wink.)

So what to do for interesting Halloween hair this year? Finding inspiration can be tricky, especially if you are like us and tend to be an, ahem, wonderfully different dressed up kind of person on the daily. Pintrest and the Internet is a great place to start of course, but your best resources are right here, with us. If you’ve been toying with an idea, but aren’t sure about the execution, just ask. Chances are, we can either talk you through it or just do it. Avante garde, crazy medusa, rock in’ 80s, whatever! Share your ideas with us and we can help make them come to life!

Happy Halloween!

You Can Park In the Back!

Dear Reader-

Our parking lot is quite large, and coming from Downtown San Jose, we see it as practically unending. But sometimes our neighbors have events and parking gets impacted. Did you know you can park in the back of the salon? Yep! There is parking in a circle all the way around Carriage Square. So don’t waste your time pacing back and forth in front. Swing around the side of Rookies and there is more parking to be had.

Sincerely,

Erin

Cherry Coke Perfection

Dear Reader-

Today we are veering away from the usual hairy topics to discuss something extremely important. Cherry Coke. Not that roughness in the can- homemade. You will find all of us at Do Or Dye greatly enjoy discussing our favorite foods and recipes. Deviled eggs, burritos, La Villa ravioli… Its quite an extensive topic for us.

Hubs and I were at Peggy Sue’s malt shop in Downtown San Jose, and they had the best Cherry Coke I have ever tasted. I swooned over it to the manager and he gave me the secret- maraschino cherry syrup! Forehead slap, of course!!

First in is the ice. Second, spoon in some syrup and a few cherries direct from the jar. Then add the Coke. Finish with a straw. The straw is an important factor in this scenario. It allows you to sip up both juice and soda at the same time. Voila! Cherry Coke at its finest! And for all you retro kids out there, that is indeed a paper straw.

You are welcome.

Dogs In the Salon- We Say Yes!

Dear Reader-

Most salons have rules about children in the salon, and we are no different. But not all of them have a dog policy-all dogs welcome!

All three of us are dog people and dog parentals. Both Keara and Lesley have a dog, and I have two plus a talkative cat. My father was a dog groomer for 45 years, so having dogs in the salon for myself especially is both nostalgic and fun. In our experience, many dogs in the salon have behaved so much better than most children have. And their owners are very aware of them, and always keep them on a tight leash. Do Or Dye realizes that dogs are as much a part of the family as kids, so if you want your well behaved dog to come to the salon with you for your appointment, we say welcome. Pet hair gets swept up with all the rest of the hair anyway.

Best-

Erin

The Three Amigos-An Odyssey

Our stations are where we keep all our junk. Blow dryers, products, scissors etc. As we were picking out furniture we fell in love with this particular station online. But they were heinously expensive. One night, as usual, Keara was surfing Craig’s List. She came across a really pretty kidney-shaped antique desk in Palo Alto. Surfing further, probably in the middle of the night because that’s how Keara rolls, she came across the same listing, but in Oakland. She was annoyed that the same listing was posted in two different cities, and was more irritated when she came across a third. She came to realize it was actually three different desks in three different cities, being sold by strangers. She sent us an email with the attachments and we decided it must be Kismet.

Keara drove to Palo Alto alone (against my paranoid advice) to get the first one. It belonged to a grandmother who had recently passed away, and the grandson was up from LA to clear out the house. The next day she and I piled into Hub’s truck and drove to San Francisco to pick up the second, and then crossed the bridge to Oaktown for the third. The man in Oakland had received it from his grandmother in Florida. The two barely fit in the bed of the truck!

Now here they sit, a lot like Keara, Lesley and myself. Cut from the same mold, but slightly different in their own oddly fabulous way. The Three Kidney Amigos.

Pictures and Client Consultations

Every stylist has their own preference, but personally I love when clients bring pictures to their appointment or consultation!! Pictures are such a great starting point for a consultation, and the beginning to plan a clients’ desired look that they’d like to achieve. Whether it’s to point out color, texture, or styles they like, or styles they know they definitely don’t like! I find it’s such a great place to begin and come together on an idea. It’s so easy to get hung up in a consultation, on both the clients’ side, and mine, with words and communication sometimes being confusing. Pictures are a great way to get onto the same level, and begin to collaborate on whichever great look a client hopes to achieve! And with the internet nowadays, we have so many great avenues to search (Google images, Pinterest, Instagram etc.)

I say, bring on the pictures!
